In keeping with the public nature of VPA the department hosted a number of events including four visiting artists and the annual Day of the Dead commemoration on November 2, 2009 at the University center ballroom.
The Visiting Artists program this year focused on the theme of Form and Meaning through a wide variety of guests including legendary painter Hung Liu, sculptor Bella Feldman, art historian Dr. Patrick Frank lecturing on Posada the Mexican printmaker and public artist Mildred Howard. These artists and art historians represented a variety of backgrounds and several disciplines provided the audience insights into the complex nature of contemporary art engaged in the public agenda.
The Day of the Dead commemoration, Hecho Por Mano took place at the University Center Ballroom on Monday November 2, 2009.
The museum Studies project supporting
the Asian Cultural Center has continued its work with community members and will participate in an exhibition this coming spring at the National Steinbeck Center. Professor Staples provides leadership for this effort and is working with scholars and community members to develop an Asian Arts Symposium in the coming year. In addition the external reviewers will soon arrive to continue the VPA Program Review. Special thanks to Stacey Malone for producing our Self Study and preparing materials.
