An 8’ x 8’ installation is a scaled up Monopoly game board. The Monopoly’s properties have been altered but still ascend from poor to rich. Houses are replaced with liquor stores, gun stores, and Wal-Marts, and hotels are replaced with production studios and corporate skyscrapers. Nickel and dimes are set into the dice. The opening in the center of the board gives an aerial perspective of the California region. The viewer is looking down onto issues I believe are important in this region. Tree stumps and homes that sprawl to the edge of agricultural fields symbolize over development. Cargo containers and trash pile representing consumerism. Cars are in a hurry to get nowhere. An escalator carrying many in their careers giving them a glance at the board only to carry them back down. In the center a medical symbol being buried by political suits. |
