  Rediscovering Paradise

“Rediscovering Paradise” is an installation which explores how historical issues of the Spanish and American colonization of Philippines, relate to issues that result from tourism.

The concept of my Capstone comes from my experience of being a Filipina-immigrant who was raised in the United States.  Though I identify myself as a Filipino, I feel that the western, American culture has a more dominant presence in my life.  In an effort to familiarize myself with my roots as a Filipino, I did the only thing that I felt was necessary for me to do.  I began to contemplate about the development of that nation and the struggles of its people.  This has led me to not only reflect on my own identity, but to also critically examine the western culture, and the society of which I am a part.
