The “Attention,
Please” exhibition is the result of the curriculum for visual
arts enrichment that I have developed and introduced to the adult English-as-a-Second-Language
classroom. This arts-based teaching method is especially important to
second-language learners who rely on visual cues. The language development
exercises invited students to consider social values presented in images
portraying families. Through the art-making, students gathered for interaction
and shared their definitions of family life, the project’s theme. |
| Giving students
the time to speak and be heard on these issues in the classroom validates
them. My hope is to show that this original art-based ESL practice is
a socially minded and successful pedagogic model. |
