Inclusive Presence    Mary Newman
This project employs the ancient presence of elephants as a reference point from which to evaluate social connections, or lack of, within modern humanity. Because elephants live and work in groups that are socially inclusive, I am drawn to their perceptiveness and wonder about the losses we have incurred following the lead of modern civilization. Some aspects of civilization have led to the corruption of our sense of "other," inflating the importance of the individual by manner of an exclusive dream. This body of work attempts to touch the earthen soul within each of us, looking at the present through eyes made sensitive by thousands of years.
