Devices    Mary Ballestero
My capstone explores the medical dehumanization of the female body and the devices used on women. In the medical model, a woman becomes only a sum of the parts that define her. By juxtaposing antique medical devices with the human form I hope to create the feeling of isolation and dread that many women experience when visiting the doctor. The images depict the isolation and ugliness of the devices that were endured by patients in order to develop the modern medical technologies we use today.
